Also on safe mode i tried to do the regedit method but that doesnt work either.I just get an error message telling me i have to activate but when i click it says that Windows is already activated and logs me out.

You should have gotten it as part of Windows Update many years ago. I will recommend that he copies all important files first and then decide on SP3. I did find an old version of Avast for the SP2 version and it is running well, found 6 viruses thanks so much for recommending the upgrade.
